What the experts say

lonely planet recomended recomends hostel ruthensteinerIf stars were given out for hostels, the first truly independent backpackers in central Europe would be a five. The ueber-friendly owners, Erin and Walter, have been catering to travelers for 34 years. Start with a quirky low-key vibe then add in an immaculate, modern facility with more renovations in progress, mix in a strong dose of personality and options galore and you’ll have a feel for this place. A beautifully handmade wooden bar, music-lounge room, and lovely garden area also enhance the surroundings.

”Hostel Ruthensteiner was refreshingly personal, cosy and fun. While brainstorming about an article on the hostel, me and my friends decided to list the positives and negatives. However, we ended up with a long list of positives…”

”After a smooth check in I meander deeper into the hostel and find not one but two interior gardens, where peaceful plants climb the walls and wrap oak benches, tables and chairs in a soft embrace.  A hand carved, oversized wooden chess set sits on the patio and groups of weary, contented travelers relax with a drink…”

” I fell in love with the magnificent artwork all around the hostel. Art is a prominent part of Vienna’s culture and the hostel reflects an understanding of the culture by featuring various pieces of art from both domestic and international artists.”

”Hostel RuthensAmbassador-banner-blog-220x220teiner has a great bar that is rounded which makes it nearly impossible to not make friends with those sitting around you because you are nearly looking at them anyhow.  The hostel is not a party hostel, but rather more of a relaxed atmosphere setting where gentle music plays when someone in the common area is not entertaining with one of the musical instruments hanging on the wall…”

The best hostel i’ve stayed at yet. the atmosphere is probably my favorite part. you can easily achieve the other categories, but not the atmosphere. attracts the greatest people and even if you just want to sit and read, there’s a place to do that amidst all the fun to be had. everything is clean, staff is helpful and friendly, and no complaints on the location. a great hostel!

It has a piano! 😀

Close enough to walk around the city and see sights without getting public transport – if you’re on a budget, we also had a really good shower!
Greg from New Zealand
The common room with the bar is great!

I really loved the location, being behind a highly trafficked street, and yet so quiet and quaint. I would stay here again, the staff was very friendly and helpful at any given time. I enjoyed eating my breackfast at the garden and listening the birds hum, when yet a block away Vienna was on the move.

This was the cleanest, most comfortable and secure hostel I have found in Europe. The pillows and comforter were so soft, wow!!!! Guests often played the piano which also was great. Great kitchen, dining room and bar.

We’ve all experienced good hostels, and we’ve all experienced the awful ones. This is very firmly in the realm of the best hostels! It feels really homely – has an ample sized kitchen and dining area and an area to chill on relaxing couches, also a terrace to sit outside in the garden. Also it has an internet room which is useful, and it is literally around the corner from Westbahnhof station (one of the two main stations in Vienna). The best thing tho, has to be the instruments in the bar…for the nights when I was there, people were just sitting chilling and singing around the piano! And every bunkbed is numbered with it’s own locker so you don’t have to worry about security. Couldn’t ask for more really! Definitely enjoyed my stay here, but think I better sign off here before this qualifies as a novel.

This was the best hostel that I have ever stayed in. My roommate and I are studying in Cork, Ireland, and decided to spend the weekend away in Vienna this November. Hostel Ruthensteiner was outstanding. The staff was very friendly and super helpful. Going to a country where you don’t know the language, in this case German, can sometimes be a little intimidating and frustrating, but Hostel Ruthensteiner made the vacation much more easier on us. Thank you!

This hostel is by far the best one i have ever stayed at. Rooms and building were spotless and a nice quiet area as well! Close to the train station and near tram and u lines.
Mike from Canada

This is an amazing place, run by two wonderful people, Erin and Walter Ruthensteiner. They were backpacking around the world and had already opened their hostel long before many of us were born. They do it right, and somehow just keep on improving every year.
